Louis Philippe Period Silver Gilt Mirror, Original Mercury Glass, France circa 1850
Louis Philippe Period Silver Gilt Mirror, Original Mercury Glass, France c.1850. This unique mirror features a bold scale of frame along with an unusual shape. The arched top reaches a point and descends along the left and right sides to reach a horizontal base. The convex profile of the moulding that creates the frame adds distinction as it gives the frame a decidely sculptural appearance. This is the original mercury backed mirror glass and as such possesses a degree of wear unusual in most mirrors. Foxing, speckling and scratches give the reflective mirror a textural depth rarely seen in Louis Philippe mirrors. Within the silver gilt the frame features an etched pattern of geometric lattice pattern that gives a sense of depth and texture. The combination of the mirror glass, the aged silver gilt of the frame along with the simplicity of the shape give this piece a most modern appeal.
