Antique Louis XVI French Gilt Wood Pareclose Mirror circa 1890 (44"w x 69"h)
The lavish detail on this antique French mirror is a testament to the power of French design. Tall in proportion, this antique mirror has a bold cartouche at the top taken from the symbol for Louis XVI when he was King of France. The torch (standing for the light of justice) crossed with the quiver of arrows (the role of the King as protector of his people) is quite dramatic. Framed with an open work laurel wreath and a ribbon the sculptural quality of the cartouche is bold and graphic. This French mirror is known as a "pareclose" because of its large central beveled mirror surrounded by four separate mirrors on the top, bottom and sides. These smaller mirrors are set at an angle to the large mirror and reflect more of the interior than a flat mirror glass is able to accomplish. This technique was invented in France before the production of grand scale mirrors was possible in order to increase the size of a reflective surface. The gilt wood frame has a ribbon twist pattern on the outer border with an inner border of ovals and spheres. Connecting the four corners of the two frames is a large shield shaped section in gilt wood that covers the join between the pieces of mirror in a very decorative manner consistent with the entire design. The original mirror has the most desirable speckles and foxing that gives old mirror its lovely quality.
