Napoleon III Style Gold Leaf Mirror, France c.1880
Napoleon III Style Gold Leaf Mirror, France c.1880. The symmetrical beauty of this mirror with its emphasis on balance and regularity is combined with an extravagance of decorative motifs that creates a sense of luxury. The frame itself is a handsome rectangle defined by its use of the famous "egg and dart" moulding. The depth of the carving needed to achieve this pattern reveals the gleam of the gold leaf against its undercoat of the "rouge" seen as the warm red colouring in the frame. The upper shoulders of the frame are set a bit wider than the body and provide a suitable frame for the lavishness of the cartouche. At the top of the mirror is an urn filled with flowers and draped with a strand of large beads that symbolize pearls while being flanked by matching open scrolls and flourishes with open flower blossoms. This design harks back to the original mirrors that were actually draped with live flowers during the eighteenth century in the spring and summer. This gold leaf frame encloses the original mirror glass with its customary speckles and spots and depth of reflection that adds a wonderful degree of interest to any interior.
