Louis XVI-Style Mirror with Musical Cartouche
This antique French mirror is notable for its neoclassical shape surmounted by a lavish cartouche at the top featuring the theme of music. The entire frame is rectangular in shape with an arch that echoes the famous "chapeau des gendarmes" which enables French policemen instantly recognizable from a distance. The cartouche itself is centered on a melange of objects all pertaining to the art of music. There is an open book of musiacal compositions as well as wind instruments crossed over each other embellished with open flower blossoms and leaves all gathered together with a ruffle edge ribbon. The flat sections of the frame itself feature an amazing variety of impressed patterns that glow with the gilt color. The juxtaposition of the size of the patterns give the mirror its sense of luxury as does the original mirror with its characteristic sparkles and speckles that show the passage of time in amnner new mirror can never do.
