Bold Régence Style Pareclose Gold Leaf Mirror, France circa 1890 (43"w x 59"h)
The gorgeous gold leaf frame that encloses the five separate pieces of the original mirror glass in this antique French mirror is simply spectacular. The use of the different mirrors was originally used to increase the amount of reflective ability before the technology existed to create one enormous piece of mirror. In France the term "pareclose" is used to define this particular type of mirror. Please look at the central cartouche at the top of the mirror centred on a grand upswept spray that is surrounded by a variety of flowers arranged to form a swag. The sculptural quality of the blossoms complements the scale of the mirror and glistens with the seductive power of gleaming gold leaf. The large central mirror is beveled and is enclosed by a slender gold leaf frame. Set within the larger outer frame are the four separate rectangular mirrors each placed at an angle to the center. By being set on the angle these mirrors actually reflect a greater portion of the room and project a visual sense of grandeur and sweep.
