Enormous Antique English Aesthetic Mirror circa 1880 (62"w x 71"h)

This enormous antique English mirror dates from the late 19th century circa 1880 and has a most striking shape as it was created using the ideas of the Aesthetic Movement. The hand applied gilt and ebonized finish serves to define the handsome architectural frame that encloses the original mirror glass plate with its characteristic speckles and aging. The mirror is in the style of Christopher Dresser, a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement that swept through England in the later nineteenth century. His original designs, thoughtfully written books and substantial output of aesthetically pleasing products ranging from textiles to silver were extremely influential in England and America. He was one of the first to incorporate the pared down beauty of Japanese design in his own work giving England a major new trend in living with items at home. The subsequent tenets of the Arts and Crafts Movement owes a great deal to the ideas first explored and expounded upon by Dresser. This antique mirror possesses a substantial scale without giving the least impression of heaviness. The slender lines of the frame with its restrained decoration have a modern feel and will fit a variety of interior design schemes. Please pay particular note to the arch top of the frame enclosing the antique mirror that is then surmounted by a rectangular frame with a triangular pediment. The open sections between the arch and pediment enable the wall behind the English mirror to be seen giving an added dimension to its appearance. This type of antique mirror does often fall under the category of the Arts and Crafts period which began a little later than the Aesthetic Movement and incorporated a number of its values about design. So an argument may be made that this is an antique English Arts and Crafts Movement mirror as well. Whatever the name though this mirror is an outstanding example of English cabinet making.
