Grand French Louis Philippe Period Giltwood Mirror with Cartouche
Grand French Louis Philippe period giltwood mirror with cartouche. Circa 1830s. The open work of the cartouche is enhanced by a cherub surrounded by scrolls and floral and foliate flourishes that spread from side to side. The tall rectangular shape of the frame has straight corners at the base adorned with floral and foliate carvings, while the upper shoulders have the typical rounded corners seen on all Louis Philippe style frames. The inner border features "les perles" (beading that resembles a strand of pearls) next to the original antique mirror glass. Red oxidation showing through the beautiful water gilded patina that is original to the piece.
Artisans used this beading technique as a decorative element on the grandest pieces, as pearls symbolized power and luxury since only the most wealthy aristocrats could afford them. The attractive nature of this mirror and its mixture of both simplicity and decoration makes it ideal for use in today's interiors.
