Huge Gold Leaf Régence Mirror, Boldly Carved, France circa 1890
(53"W x 100"H) The scale of this antique French mirror is highly unusual and was originally in a grand country chateau in Normandy, France. The mirror has a lovely cartouche at the top whose design first appeared at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The large open work flourish is flanked by an open "C" shaped scroll as well as different types of flowers that have been draped across the entire width. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was customary to use real flowers to decorate the interiors. Please notice how the symmetry of the frame is enhanced with the artistic arrangement of the flowers as they cascade. Each of the flowers is individually modeled and are different from each other and rendered in fully sculptural effect. The mirror retains its original finish of gold and cream which has a luminous appearance. The lower left and right sides of the mirror also feature a large scroll that relates to the shape of the cartouche at the top and serve to visually balance the great height of the mirror. The beauty of this mirror will provide an exceptional focal point in an interior because of its scale and excellent craftsmanship.
