Antique Painted French Louis XVI Mirror circa 1890 (38"w x 65 1/2"h)
This large mirror is unique in that it may be installed either horizontally or vertically known in the design profession as either landscape or portrait positions. The antique painted French mirror circa 1890 is Louis XVI in style as the pattern of the frame moulding is taken from examples used during the late eighteenth century when Louis XVI was King of France (1774-1792). An important element of this frame to be aware of is the excellent care taken to match the corners of the frame so the pattern makes a symmetrical join between the grooved design. The bold scale of the frame itself is complemented by the variety of large and small scale designs that repeat along the entire perimetre of the frame. The change in depth between the smooth painted surface and the deep details captures and reflects light in an intriguing manner as it plays across the surface of the frame. The original mirror glass has the customary speckles age seen on antique glass as well as a pronounced angle to the reflected image that gives it a distinct personality.
