Rocky coast with heavy surf by Gilbert Tucker Margeson (1852 - 1949)
Gilbert Margeson, a marine painter, was born in Nova Scotia and became known as the Dean of the Rockport Colony, where he was a long-time member of the Rockport Artist Association and in 1873, was the first artist to set up a studio in Rockport on the eastern shore of Cape Ann. Painting was a part-time job for Margeson in Rockport as he also ran a stationery store and was the tax collector in the early 1900s. Because of his encouragement, Arthur B. Frost came to Rockport, and other artists followed with the word spreading of the beauties of that area. This oil on canvas is a testament to his talent. Our item # 10145
