Rare Regency Period Caesar Wax Portrait Miniature
A stunning and realistic antique wax portrait of Caesar in medallion style, framed in an original shadow box. This portrait dates to the 1850s, but wax portraiture came into fashion as early as the 1750s during the Regency period in England. Among the wealthy and royalty, wax was one of the earliest mediums for portraiture. Not only were self- portraits commissioned by the wealthy but also popular heroes became the subjects of these miniature art works. Miniature wax portraits executed in bas-relief were very popular until the introduction of photography in the mid 19th Century. Wax became an ideal material for sculptural portraiture as the medium is has a translucent surface that can capture the feel of skin making it easily colored to represent realistic flesh tints. This wax portrait is a profile of Julius Caesar with his signature laurel leaf crown. He is hand painted in a realistic color, and details are also rendered carefully. The sculptural wax portrait is set into a shadow box against black velvet for a more dramatic effect. The velvet backdrop is elegant, and the presentation of the wax miniature is an equally considered as the portrait. The oval medallion is set into and framed by a wooden square that has a repeating pattern at the four corners. The antique wooden frame has some normal wear for its age but remains in great condition. The wax miniature measures approximately 1-1/2 inches tall by 1/2 an inch wide and the box frame is 5 by 5 inches, and 1/2 an inch deep. Although the wax portraits were made from a mold, they were not mass produced and today wax miniatures are quite rare. Each on is uniquely hand painted after the wax is pulled away from the mold making each portrait completely unique. Wax miniatures however were rarely signed by the artist. The beauty of this artwork can be easily appreciated just by looking at all the fine quality craftsmanship invested in the making of this wax portrait.
