James Hiroshi Suzuki (1933- ); Untitled; Surrealist mixed medium collage on board
A rare original mixed medium collage by Japanese/American artist James Hiroshi Suzuki; signed, possibly titled, and dated '69'. The 'Kafka-esque' work (it reminds me of 'Metamorphosis') embodies elements of Surrealism, Expressionism, Symbolism, and of course, to keep with the theme of the 1960's, Psychedelia.
The artwork is composed of collage, gouache, watercolor, and oil or acrylic. Before the signature is written a nonsensical word that is partially obscured by paint and could possibly be a title for the piece.
Born and raised in Japan, Suzuki began his artistic studies in his native land with Yoshio Markino. He later emigrated to the US during the 1950's where he continued studying art, and ultimately Suzuki ended up living and working in California. Works by the artist are held in museum collections internationally.
