Jean Édouard Lacretelle (Forbach 1817 - Paris 1900) studied in Paris, but came to London in 1851. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1841-81 and at the Royal Academy from 1851-91. Principally known as a portrait painter, he also produced genre scenes and equestrian works.
Following the Napoleonic Wars, the passion for horse racing in England spread to France and developed rapidly during the 19th century bringing a demand for artwork of horses
