Henry Bonnefoy is the student of Léon Cogniet to the School of Fine Arts of Paris. He exposed regularly to the Show of Paris from 1857, then without discontinuity from 1873-1904, as well as in the Show of the artists of Arras (from 1875-1904) and in the one of Amiens. He was a member of the Society of the French artists. He received a medal of the third class in the Show of 1880, another one second-class in the Show of 1884 also a silver medal in the World Fair of 1889. He left numerous rural or animal sights, as well as still life paintings, always tinged with nostalgia

In 1824, the Paris Salon exhibited some of the works of John Constable. His rural scenes had a decisive influence on younger artists, leading them to abandon the formalism of the time and take their inspiration from Nature. They produced paintings, often of rural scenes, that broke from the dramatic mythological themes.
During the 1848 revolution, the painters that would soon be associated with Crozant school or the Barbizon school got together and deliberately opted to follow Constable's precepts
