Biedermeier Portrait of a Lady, 1823
Portrait of a lady by Wilhelm Michaelsen, 1823, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "Wilh. Michaelsen pinxit 1823."
Beautiful portrait painted with a passion for detail. Style and name of the painter suggest a German background, he was very likely a student of the Duesseldorf Academy. His style shows the influence of the Duesseldorf born Heinrich Christoph Kolbe (1771-1836). Kolbe, after living and working for 10 years in Paris, returned 1811 to Duesseldorf and became one of the most influential portrait painters of the Rhineland. From 1822-1832, Kolbe was professor at the Duesseldorf Academy.
Even though we have not been able to find any background information on Wilhelm Michaelsen so far, his Portrait of a Lady shows a mastery which puts him on a level with the great masters of portrait painting of the early 19th century.
