George Morland (1763 - 1804), Gypsies Resting in the Woods, Oil on Canvas

Original oil on canvas by English artist George Morland titled "Gypsies Resting in the Woods", c. 1790. This painting is signed G. Morland lower right.

George Morland was an English painter who was born in London on the 26th of June 1763. He was a portrait artist as well as a dealer, forger, and restorer. George was precocious and a fluent worker and produced a huge amount of work, in spite of leading a dissolute life of an alcoholic. His is mostly recognized for his small scenes of middle and lower-class rural life, usually depicting the tavern and stable rather than the cottage. The quality of his work is uneven, but at his best he showed a spirited technique and a sure sense of tone. His paintings became extremely popular and he was highly imitated and forged. George passed away in 1804. Numerous prints were made after his death, some of them by his brother-in-law William Ward.
