Claude Sébastien Hugard studied formally with the great Swiss Romantic painters, Alexandre Calame (1810-1864) and François Diday (1802–1877), a Swiss landscape painter.

He had made his first trip to Paris, officially relocating there in 1844 to finish his training; he made his debut at the Salon and won several awards until 1880

His paintings can be seen in the Annecy Museum of Fine Arts, the Aurillac Museum of Fine Arts, the Boulogne-sur-Mer Museum of Fine Arts, the Chambéry Museum of Fine Arts and the Moulins Museum of Fine Arts
