The present work exemplifies Hippolyte De Bourg d'Orschwiller's masterful depictions of Monkey. Since 1857 influenced by Decamps, D'Orschwiller specialised in monkey subjects from early in his career, responding to a ready market for such new and exciting subjects.
Settled in Paris he became a regular exhibitor at the Salon from 1834 to 1864 where he presented continuously animal painting and Swiss views.
Examples can be found among others in the museums in Bern and Posen.
