Nude, by Armand Berton (1858-1927), Oil on Canvas dated 1907.

Beron's muted tonality in this sensuous depiction of a woman at her vanity is reminiscent of Renaissance painting in its treatment of chiaroscuro (or highly contrasted light and shadow). She is delicately rendered, in luminous pales hues and hazy contours that conceal her nudity, and her reflection in the mirror personalizes the composition, as do the small bouquet of flowers on the mantle.
This painting was exhibited in the 1921 retrospective of the artist in the Salon de Paris in 1921. Signed and dated lower left. It is framed in its original Louis XV gold gilt carved French frame.

Commentary

"Berton was accepted very young into the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, and then into the Ecole des Beaux Arts in PAris. When he suddenly lost his hearing, he decided to pursue his artistic career on his own by spending a lot of time studying the works of master painters at the Louvre. His work was exhibited at the Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts from 1910 to 1921, and he received the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Francais and the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1900.
