La Toilette, by Marcel Cosson (1878-1956). Oil on Canvas
Cosson was a regular guest at Gertrude's Stein's salon in Paris between the two world wars, and rubbed shoulders with his fellow painters Manguin, Matisse, Picasso and Camoin. Women in front of their vanities were a favorite subject matter among artists, for it transmitted a certain intimacy as well as the inner thoughts of the sitter. Cosson weaves a wonderful tapestry of color, texture and patterns into his composition, highlighted by indirect light coming in from the window which adds transparency and radiance to the pictorial surface. Cosson has studied the intricate juxtapositions of color and form from the works of Vuillard and his fellow Nabis artists, and integrated them into composition that exudes the light and immaterial freshness of the artist's chromatic sense.
