Nicolas Stanislas-Auguste Vimar (Marseille 1851 - 1916) was a French painter, illustrator and comic book artist. One of the precursors of animal comics, his work has inspired many other artists, notably Benjamin Rabier famous for creating The Laughing Cow the French ‘’La vache qui rit’’

Auguste Vimar undertook racing scenes throughout his career, with skillful economy of means, Vimar allowed the wood to color the sky and distant landscape, and to provide a warm undertone for the turf in the foreground.
