Voldemars Gutmanis, Beached Boats and Fishing Village Oil Painting
Voldemars Gutmanis was a Latvian artist (1904-1988) known for his oil paintings of lush landscapes and thick use of oil paint. Born in Liepaja, Latvia, he was a contemporary of Mark Rothko and well known in Latvia and among his artist peers. He went to the Latvian State Academy of Art and earned a degree specializing in Landscape painting. This oil painting titled Beached Boats and Fishing Village depicts a scene with fresh and thick brush strokes; his marks are reminiscent of the style of impressionist painters capturing light, adding thick paint in layers, representing the passing of time and the changing scenery. Gutmanis painted the landscapes always from nature, resulting in the bold colors and dramatic gestures that rendered the scenery before him, and before us today. Gutmanis exhibited around Europe and America; this painting was first exhibited in a collection in Minneapolis. The framed painting is 26" x 34" inches, with a 2 1/2 inch frame. It is signed Vold.Gutmanis and dated 72' on the lower right. The painting is recently reframed to accentuate the brilliant colors of the painting. The painting hangs easily with a wire setting from the back. Playful brushstrokes, vibrant bold colors and an idyllic landscape make this painting a beauty to live with and a wonderful addition to an art collection.
