“The Nativity of Virgin Mary”, 17th century Spanish, Sevillian School Oil Painting on Wood Panel
This oil painting, dated to around 1680 and in a gilt and red painted frame, uses light to feature Mary as a blessed baby in the hands of her caregivers, with her mother resting in the background. Though this event is not recorded in the Bible, the Catholic Church celebrates Mary’s birthday (September 8) with a feast in a special case only alongside the birthday of Saint John the Baptist. The image is in the 17th century Sevillian School style known for its use of light and dark, subtle incorporation of color, and often with striking religious content. Though the official art academy closed after just several decades, it had a distinct influence on the artistic culture of the city of Seville and beyond.
