Patrice Landauer (1965-1980), Marrakesh Marketplace, Oil on board

This Orientalist composition vibrates under the radiant sunlight and brilliant colors of the Mediterranean. An open marketplace bustles with activity, and a display of luscious melons in the foreground bring us into the midst of the activity. Women in flowing white hijabs which catch the light bend over to examine the merchandise, their movements animating and bringing to life the composition. Initialed lower right.

"Born in Paris, Landauer studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and then attended the prestigious Penninguen academy in Paris. He is a prolific artist who has exhibited in galleries in France, Belgium and Switzerland and whose subject matter is inspired by his travels in North Africa.
He was inspired by the French painter Marjorelle, who recorded his many trips to Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt at the beginning of the XXth century. Landauer ‘s compositions reflect the brilliant hues and radiant light of the Mediterranean. He captures the atmosphere of busy outdoor markets, colorful bazaars and sleepy ports along the sea. He paints with loose, broad brushstrokes of contrasting color which animate the pictorial surface and create emotionally charged compositions.
