School of Bologna, c. 1690-1710 "St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata" Oil on Canvas

A spectacular Italian Baroque Old Master painting depicting St. Francis receiving the Stigmata, School of Bologna circle of Felice Torelli. This work dates to the end of the 17th c- early 18th c. The painting was recently cleaned which brought out many details and light contrasts that could not be seen when originally acquired. Interestingly, in paintings of the same subject matter St. Francis is usually depicted in the process of receiving the stigmata where he appears to be in ecstasy. In the current work the subject is presented in a more humanistic manner, the saint has already been bestowed the stigmata and he appears frail and tired, depending on the archangels to support him. Every order of angel is represented in the painting as well; cherubs, archangels, and the highest order, the Seraph which actually gave St. Francis the blessed markings. *Note Areas of the painting in the photographs appear washed out and faded due to poor lighting although this isn't actually the case when seen in person.

Commentary

"interestingly, the current work bears a striking resemblance to a painting of the same subject by Ubaldo Gandolfi in it's structure, composition and use of motifs, although this work predates Gandolfi's by about 50 years. Albeit conjecture, I believe that this painting was used by Gandolfi as a template for his masterpiece referenced above. Please contact for further details."
