"Le Port St-Sauveur at Toulouse" Original oil on canvas by George Carpenter Signed & Dated
An original signed oil on canvas by British artist, George Carpenter, (Active: 19th Century), titled "Le Port St-Sauveur at Toulouse" dated next to signature: 1842. An important painting featuring history and commerce of Toulouse, France. Recently featured on the front cover of L'AUTA, Histoire, Arts et Lettres en Midi Toulousain. On back: "CARPENTER (G.) peintre de paysages; exposa en 1831 et 1832 a la Royal Academy et e la British Institution a Londres (Ecole anglaise). L'ancien port aux vins a Toulouse, n'extise plus actuellement." This painting is especially interesting because not only is it wonderfully well done, but this scene of a historical Wine Port in Toulouse is a place that does not exist today anymore. There is superb fine detail on from close up gentlemen and barrels to even every distant character strolling or working on the ships. One can utilize a magnifying glass to study this grand work of art. The frame appears to be from the period and original to the painting. Framed size: 30" x 34". Canvas size: 19" x 23.5". Very good condition.
From an French Historian: "The ancient port of wine was then called "Le port St-Sauveur". The opposite bank of the canal was occupied by the "accelerated shipping service" of goods towards the eastern side of the country. The two green barges, drawn by horses, carried passengers at full speed, 11 km/per hour, day and night. I have found no other picture of this port at that time."
From the BENEZIT DICTIONNAIRE: "CARPENTER (G.) peintre de paysages; exposa en 1831 et 1832 a la Royal Academy et e la British Institution a Londres" which translates from French to English to "Landscape painter; exhibited in 1831 and 1832 at the Royal Academy and the British Institution in London."
