Conversation on the Pier, by Gustave Edouard Le Senechal de Kerdreoret (1840-1920),

List Price $14,500

This airy and luminous marine painting is reminiscent of Manet’s style, rendered with atmospheric intensity through the combination of a translucent bottle green sea contrasted against a darkening sky. The scene is animated by two figures deep in conversation along the pier, who add movement and intimacy to this breathtaking seascape.

" Le Senechal was born in France in 1840 and died in 1920. He was passionate about the sea, and worked as a captain in the French maritime. He started experimenting in painting thanks to a select group of mentors who encouraged him, and succeeded in exhibiting his first works at the Salon de Paris in 1869. His themes are bustling ports, scruffy fisherman and romantic seascapes. He received the Bronze Medal for his work at the Paris World’s Fair in 1889,and the Silver Medal in 1900, along with the prestigious Legion d’Honneur.
