Regatta on the Seine, by Paul Vogler (1852-1904). Oil on Canvas

Vogler, an intimate friend of the painter Sisley’s, reveals his mastery of Impressionism in this animated scene of a regatta along the Seine. The sweeping landscape and luminous sky are punctuated by the presence of bright, wind-filled sails gliding along the river, adding movement and depth to the composition. Signed lower left. Framed in carved, delicately gilded French frame.

Commentary

"
Although Vogler was self-taught and never benefited from academic training, he easily acquired the technical skills to succeed as a painter and displayed in his art a great sensitivity to nature as well as a gift for harmonious chromatic composition.
He worked with the Impressionists, and was highly influenced by the work of Sisley, who gave him advice on the effect of light in the dissolution of matter. He successfully exhibited his work alongside that of Bonnard, Vuillard, Signac, and Lautrec at the Galerie Vollard in Paris.
His paintings of animated landscapes and fluvial scenes inspired by his travels throughout France are rendered with brilliance, spontaneity and an exuberance of color. They glow thanks to his radiant depiction of light and palette of fresh, harmonious colors.
