"Palm Hats" by Leo Matiz, Gelatin Silver Photograph, c. 1945
A man lays out hand-woven palm hats to dry in this photograph taken c. 1945 by Colombian photographer Leo Matiz (1917-1998). The hats appear almost connected, as the strands of each hat spread and intermingle with the other hats; the bright white of this pattern contrasts with the man placing them on the ground. Matiz was known as an eclectic artist, best known for taking portraits of famous Latin American artists and capturing everyday artisans. Blindstamp Fundacion Leo Matiz, Leo Matiz ink stamp verso. Originally taken in 1945, this gelatin silver print was printed in 1991 and is signed verso in pencil by Matiz. It is offered unframed.
