Le Nouveau Theatre de la Grande Bretagne, Johannes Kip, 1719, copperplate engraving
The South West Prospect of Ludlow Town & Castle, from the fourth volume of "Le Nouveau Theatre de la Grande Bretagne". This print comes from the monumental four volume set of views of country seats, palaces, and city views originally conceived by Johannes Kip and Leonard Knuff. In 1707, Kip and Knuff issued an 80 plate volume entitled Britannia Illustrata, which was expanded the next year. A third volume was added in 1716, and then publisher Joseph Smith added a fourth volume in 1724. The forth volume was entitled Description Exacte des Villes, Eglises, Cathedrals, Hopiteaux, Ports de Mer, etc. de Grande Bretagne. The print is dated 1719 in the cartouche.
