Embossed, Painted and Gold Leaf Leather Screen with Four Panels from France circa 1840

An embossed, painted and gold leaf leather screen with four panels from France c.1840 of substantial size. This screen consists of a striking design combining both the tactile method of embossing a raised design upon the smooth leather panels as well as the addition of painted and gilded highlights to accentuate the pattern. All four of the panels have individual sections of leather that have been stretched across a wooden frame and attached with brass nail heads chosen to provide a visual punctuation to the overall appearance. The main feature of each panel is a pair of inward facing swans almost in the centre whose outstretched wings move across the surface to frame a large circular medallion beneath. Inside all four medallions is the same motif of a pair of leafy branches but please use the zoom feature offered on our website to view the enlarged photographs top see the subtle differences resulting from the hand tooling used to create these designs. At the base of each panel is another pair of wings that spread across the space while in each upper section is a pair of large scrolls whose curved profile moves across the entire upper section in a bold manner. Filling in the other spaces on the screen is a continuous pattern of facing scrollwork in various sizes that completely enchant the eye as it moves from side to side and up and down. originally this screen was used as a "paravent" translated from the French as "against the wind" because it was used on the floor near an open door or window to protect the occupants from a sudden gust of wind. Now of course these screens possess little practical use but their stunning and original designs make them ideal for display upon a wall where the unusual and evocative designs create an extraordinary focal point when used in a modern context.
