Chemin "Dog and Snail" Cast Bronze Animalier Sculpture

A playful and exquisite cast bronze sculpture of a dog and snail by Joseph Chemin (1825-1901) a French Animalier. He was known for specializing in sculpting small animals, mostly dogs in a variety of landscapes. This piece is known as "Chien et escargot", dog and snail, and represents a highly animated scene between these two creatures. The snail climbs up a rock as the dog is about to bounce on him; a few leaves, bark and other details from the ground are exquisitely rendered. The dog has equal amounts of detail work from the nails on its paws to its rib cage and tensed muscles. A lovely sculpture for an animal lover, a wonderful art piece that exemplifiers the Animaliers movement in art, prominent in the late 19th Century France among all sections of the middle-classes.
