Louis Mayer (1869-1969) American; "Mermaid and Satyr", an original pair of bronze bookends

A fantastic and highly whimsical pair of bronze bookends by Louis Mayer, cast in 1910. When in use as bookends, the two figures sit back to back, the Satyr playing enchanting music on his Pan pipe while the Mermaid sits forlorn wondering where the beautiful sound is coming from. Both are signed, and the mermaid is also dated '1910'. Louis Mayer was a very important figure in the early Wisconsin art community, particularly in Madison, but he later moved to California where he remained for the rest of his life.
