Early 20th Century patinated bronze sculpture of a female whippet on marble base, signed by Pierre Jules Mene (France, 1810-1879), one of the great Animalier Sculptors. The artist captures the dog as she pauses with alertness, extending her body and looking behind her with a riding whip in her mouth. The detail on the body of the dog is exquisite; you can see the artist paid attention rendering all the muscles and tendons on the animal as she is poised. This elegant sculpture is a fine example of the important Animalier school of sculpture, which was born in France in the 19th Century. Signed PJ Mene.
