Brutalist Mixed Metal Wall Sculpture, by John Risley
Lively, hand-made, patinated metal wall sculpture by John Risley about 1965-1970. This has a gorgeous painterly surface with drips and swirls of brass and bronze on a darker steel base. The layered metal shapes give it great texture and interest. It is spiky, but not jagged, with some patches that are shiny and others that are earthy - a wonderful and unique piece. Titled "The Queen's Necklace."
John Risley (1919 - 2002), a listed artist, was an accomplished sculptor and long-time Wesleyan art professor. Risley is also known for designing whimsical metal furniture that was factory made. This piece bears a paper label on the back "Risley" and the handwritten title of the work. The sculpture is brutalist in style, with a lightness of spirit and warmth typical of Risley.
