Stone Sculpture of Young Woman, 19th Century
A good-sized alabaster bust of a pensive young woman, this is a lovely piece for vignettes and ideal for a console. It is 19th c. Italian (or possibly French). Expertly carved, this young woman looks serene, grave, petulant, or reflective, depending on your angle of viewing. (And probably your own attitude.) Bare shoulders.
We have placed her on a buffet and surrounded her with white pumpkins, switched those out for holiday greens, and styled her on plainer surfaces as well. At present she is resting on a simple modern dresser in the Walnut & West office- she does it all with aplomb!
A note on her condition: this bust shows some damages of time, but it "works" with her overall look, in our opinion. Visible in the photos, there are a few shallow cracks with old repairs-one down the front of her chest, another on her right neck and cheek. There are light chips characteristic of alabaster here and there, and the stone is not uniform in color. Photos show how she looks in many lights. The wear and tear do not affect her features or her beauty, and to our eye they add a little texture and hint of a story to her presence in a room, though please don't buy her if you prefer perfection. Stunning, but imperfect. Unsigned. This piece weighs over 30 pounds. Additional photos available.
