Octagonal serpentine and jasper semi precious stone font, Italy c.1895
An octagonal serpentine and jasper semi precious stone font from Italy c.1895. Please note the gorgeous combination of the lustrous deep green of the serpentine and deep red of the jasper that creates such a striking effect in this miniature version of a font. The circular base has a sloped edge that becomes a flat surface to support the five columns that provide the structursal support for the bowl at the top. This bowl has an octagonal shape around its perimetre and these eight flat sides contain a deep bowl within their confines. The upper font, cental column and base are all carved from a single piece of stone while the four individual columns were carved separately and then affixed. Please note the stylistic similarities between the larger sculptural elements and the smaller columns with the ring turnings and circular bases and tops of the smaller columns echoing those seen in the larger font. The variegated colours of the serpentine showcases the startling red colour of the jasper as it moves in a random fashion throughout the serpentine mineral. Whether diplayed singly or perhaps as a collection (please see our stock number EEJ35B) this is a handsome piece of Italian craftsmanship.
