Standing Lion Garden Sculpture, Southampton, England c. 1900
A marvelously lifelike sculpture of a lion standing on a solid base of reconstituted stone from a garden in Southampton, England c. 1900. Please notice that the lion is fully sculpted in the round and is able to be viewed from any direction. All four legs are visible with the front left paw raised atop an orb. This particular stance refers to the concept of "Rule Britannia" popularized during the reign of Queen Victoria and is emblematic of British power in the world. This piece was originally set on top of a column and was a focal point in the garden. Now it carries the same power and may be used both inside or outdoors.
