Tall Aboriginal Tribal Parrying Shield, New Zealand
The dramatic tribal design of this hand carved and painted shield is quite bold. Originally shields such as this were used to parry blows from a club when in heated battle with an enemy. That is why there is a handle on the reverse of the shield large enough to fit a hand through to wield the entire piece. The raised decoration is emphasized by the use of chalk based paint that delineates the sections effectively. This shield retains its original knotted hemp decoration seen around the perimeter and is now mounted for display on a custom iron stand.
