Carved Wooden Santo Sculpture

This is a small hand made wooden sculpture of a Saint (Santo) or monk, dating back to the turn of the Century, from colonial Spain. The figure is hand carved with simple gestures that are in keeping with the religious value of these art sculptures. The figure stands up erect, wearing a faded, but once patterned cloak of pink, green, yellow and black; the local gypsum was used to hand make paints that today are traces. The figure once had extended arms but today it has peg holes for where that used to be. He stands 9 inches tall on the simple pedestal that is 3 inches wide. The figure and stand are fastened together by a single nail. This small religious figure most likely once travelled far to spread religion in the colonies, and its portable size made it easy to bring to into the home. This Santo sculpture is a great addition to a collection of historical or religious figures, and for someone who appreciates antique woodworking.
