"Vanitas" Sculpture, Original Paint, Italy circa 1740
A massive hand carved and painted wooden section from an altarpiece depicting the "Vanitas" symbol of a skull and bones that refers to the fleeting quality of earthly life from the Abruzzo region of Italy c.1740. Please notice the depth of the carving that emphasizes the play of light and shadow across the entire façade. When seen from the reverse the joinery technique is clearly visible as is the age of the timber. The original painted finish remains with the worn sections adding to the sense of verisimilitude.
