An Italian Late Renaissance carved hardwood figural group depicting Dionysus and a Maenad
A beautifully carved and formerly parcel-gilt hardwood Late Renaissance sculptural group depicting Dionysus and a Maenad, after the Hellenistic antiquity. Sculpted with great detail and realism, the closely draped cloth silhouettes the figures exposing various body contours and creating a sense of fluidity and movement.
The sculpture was originally parcel-gilt but was later painted, probably to simulate bronze, sometime in the 19th c, and the base was added at around the same time. In certain areas where the paint has chipped off, remnants of the original gold gilding are still visible.
A later, Graeco-Roman copy of the original Hellenistic group currently resides in the Boston MFA.
