Walnut Model of Michelangelo's Baldachin for St. Peter's, Italy c.1870
A handsome walnut baldachin from Italy c.1870. This tabletop model was crafted after Michaelangelo's superb structure in St. Peter's at the Vatican in Rome. The dramatic dome is topped with a finial in the form of a sphere and has a flat rim around the entire perimetre. Each of the four columns has the slightly tapered form referred to as "entasis" in the classical orders of architecture and stand upon substantial plinth bases. What is interesting to note about this model is that the columns are not placed symmetrically on the base but are spaced so that two are on the left and two are on the right. This gives a wider platform for an object to be displayed within the space enclosed by the four columns. This particular piece is striking on its own as an example of the beauty and purity of classical construction but it will also draw attention to any prized possession placed within the space created by the four columns.
