An Early, Fine Upper Sepik Carved Kundu Drum with Extensive Signs of Use and Patina
A very fine, early, and heavily used hand drum (kundu) originating from the Kavieng region (New Ireland) of Papua, New Guinea where it was collected in situ in the early 30's. The drum is wonderfully carved with tribal motifs and a face on each side of the drum, one side darker, more heavily encrusted while the other side glistens and appears more 'polished' due to the drum continuously rubbing up against the natives side as it was being carried while walking. Towards the bottom is incised 'KAV' for Kavieng. An exceptional example of a Kundu.
