Important Dayak Carved Ironwood Bowl in the Form Aso; Borneo, c. 1900
An important and finely carved Dayak ironwood bowl, the entire bowl in the form of a mythological beast know as an 'Aso' and dating to the first quarter of the 20th c. The bowl has an excellent patina, retains some of its original lime inlays, and displays overt signs of use creating a beautiful 'skin'. The artifact was acquired from an important Los Angeles collection where it resided since c. 1940, which would be around the time it was purchased from an Ethnographic art dealer by the former owner.
Based on the quality and detail of the carving, the bowl would have been created for an important individual, possibly a chief, and it greatly outshines other known examples of Dayak bowls found on the market and even in museums. An internationally known and noted French collector of Dayak artifacts has referred to this particular example as "a pure jewel".
