Moon or Water Goddess China Early Ming Style
One of the high notes, for me, in Chinese art are these exceptional carvings of the moon or water goddess. The are generally depicted seated in a posture called "Royal Ease". San Francisco Asian Art Museum has a great example. We had a chance to buy this one and decided to role the dice. We consulted with respected experts and learned that this statue is part of a group of carvings made relatively recently. In any case this elegant androgynous carved and painted goddess is about 2% of what the authentic example would cost. The originals are from the late Yuan or early Ming dynasties and where created about 1300AD. This one was probably made after 1980.
