Mexican Colonial Wooden Saint (Santo) Sculpture
This Santo sculpture was hand carved during the turn of the Century and is made of solid wood. The saint can be positioned in various ways on this stand, as he rotates. You can see that the sculpture was once painted in several colors such as red, green, yellow, which today appear faded. The figure is made of solid wood and with its weight has cracked the pedestal it stands on, so its age can be seen but only adds to the qualities of this antique sculpture. The statue is also missing its right arm, which was once extended, and now reveals the wooden construction of the figure. The Saints facial features are highly detailed. The ears, eyes and even eyelashes are still visible. On the top of his head is a hole where perhaps there was once a halo. The figure is perhaps the Apostle Matthew, because he was once a winged figure (the angel wings are missing from this statue but you can see where they once were on the back). It's a great conversation piece, a wonderful addition to a Santo collection, a great historical and religious artifact.
