Mexican Colonial Hand Carved Wooden Santo (Saint) Sculpture
Mexican Colonial wooden figure of Saint Andrew as he looks down holding a bible in one hand and carrying the cross in another. The figure has been hand-carved out of wood and stands on a pedestal that resembles a chest. The figure wears a cloak that appears to have traces of a hand-painted design that have now been worn off. The statue itself is in great condition and the wood has no cracks or tears but its surface patina layer has faded over time. The origin of this wooden Saint figure is unknown, most likely from Central America or Mexico, making this a colonial religious statue. The figure has angular features in both his dress and face; the artist has stylized this figure to his own liking giving him an original look, yet the figure is naive and restrained in its style. The artist who made this figure remains pious in his chaste depiction of Saint Andrew. This Saint is particularly interesting in his depiction, for just like Jesus, he was martyred on a cross, but an oddly shaped cross, because Saint Andrew did not feel worthy of a similar cross as his savior. The figure is 14 inches tall and the pedestal he stands on is 3 inches. This wooden figure is a wonderful addition to a Santo collection, and also a fascinating sculpture, for its religious or historical value as well as its craftsmanship.
