Cornucopia Wall Carving, Painted and Gilded, Italy c.1800
Cornucopia Wall Carving, Painted and Gilded, Italy c.1800. This extremely detailed and elaborate carving is in the form of a cornucopia associated throughout the ages with the abundance of the natural world. The cone shaped horn of plenty is always depicted with a generous amount of fruits and vegetables spilling forth in a delightful cascade. The original painted finish with its monochrome palette highlighted with gilding enhances the sculptural three dimensional effect. Originally this piece was in an interior where the only light came from a blazing fire and lit candles so its bold and robust carving was essential in creating the desired lavish effect.
