An early example of an Orkney Basket Chair. The Orkney Chair was designed by farmers and fisherman living in the Orkney Islands off the northern tip of Scotland. The tall hand-woven straw barrel back sits over a low plank seat.

"The straw back was meant to protect the sitter from drafts as well as add comfort. The shorter legs were created to avoid the smoky air that filled most Orkney homes. A hood or a drawer was often added to store haberdashery, whisky or tobacco."
